Modernist Pius X Weathercock Rooster - 1960s
-
Description
This striking abstract sculpture, interpreted as a modernist weathercock rooster, was originally installed atop the Pius X Parish Church in Amsterdam’s Slotervaart district. Designed in the late 1950s and completed in 1960, the church represents a significant work in the mature period of architect J.A. van der Laan (1896–1966).
Characterized by its minimalist yet expressive form, the weathercock combines oxidized metal patina with sculptural geometry, balancing symbolic presence and brutalist materiality. It once crowned a monumental post-war Roman Catholic complex that included the church, surrounding schools, and a patronage house - an ensemble that contributed to the spiritual and social infrastructure of the neighborhood. -
