Description
A monumental and highly refined Japanese cloisonné enamel vase attributed to Gotō Seizaburō, among the most accomplished artists working during the late Meiji period and celebrated for his sophisticated balance of naturalism and design.
The vase is of elegant baluster form, rising with a slender, elongated neck to a gently flared rim—its proportions emphasizing height, grace, and presence. The surface is set against a rich, deep cobalt blue enamel ground of exceptional depth and clarity, providing a dramatic field for a finely composed arrangement of chrysanthemum blossoms.
The decoration features chrysanthemums in various stages of bloom, from fully opened flowers to tightly formed buds, rendered with remarkable subtlety. The petals are articulated through delicate cloisonné wire and softly modulated enamel tones, achieving a painterly effect rarely encountered in the medium. The foliage is equally refined, each leaf modeled with naturalistic precision, conveying movement and depth across the surface while maintaining a sense of compositional restraint.
Unlike more densely ornamented examples, the composition here is intentionally measured and balanced, allowing the uninterrupted ground to enhance the elegance of the floral arrangement. This approach reflects the highest level of artistic control—where refinement is achieved through restraint rather than excess.
The neck is further enriched with understated scrolling motifs and stylized foliage, carefully integrated so as to complement the primary decoration without disrupting the harmony of the form. The overall effect is one of quiet sophistication and visual clarity.
Works attributed to Gotō Seizaburō are distinguished by their precise wirework, refined aesthetic, and painterly approach to natural subjects. Comparable examples are held in important collections, including the Yale University Art Gallery, where they are recognized for their technical excellence and artistic refinement.
Vases of this scale and quality are increasingly scarce, particularly those associated with the Gotō workshop.
A monumental and museum-quality example of Meiji period cloisonné, embodying the refined elegance, technical mastery, and artistic sophistication that define the finest works of the period.
