A Palatial Sevres Orientalist Vase ‘Prayers in the Desert’ by Andre Dore

A Palatial Sevres Orientalist Vase ‘Prayers in the Desert’ by Andre Dore

A monumental and highly evocative exhibition work, Prayers in the Desert embodies a rare and sophisticated dialogue between historic Sèvres porcelain and contemporary master painting. The porcelain body, produced by the renowned Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres circa 1904, has been transformed by André Doré in 2004 into a fully immersive Orientalist narrative of exceptional depth and refinement.

The surface presents a continuous panoramic composition of devotional figures set within an expansive desert landscape. Doré’s painterly technique is extraordinary—his palette ranging from warm amber and saffron tones to subtle violet shadows, creating a luminous, atmospheric field that shifts with light and perspective. The figures, rendered with remarkable realism and emotional sensitivity, convey states of prayer, contemplation, and spiritual presence, each integrated seamlessly into the surrounding terrain.

Encircling the neck is a finely executed gilt inscription of the Basmallah (“In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful”), serving both as a sacred invocation and as a unifying ornamental band that anchors the work’s spiritual narrative.

The vase retains its original Sèvres factory marks, including the green printed “S” above 1904 within a triangle (indicating the porcelain body), and the red printed “RF Manufacture Nationale Doré à Sèvres 1907” mark. The interior rim is fully inscribed and dated: “André Doré / ‘Prayers in the Desert’ / 2004.” Additional elements include an applied metal seal and a round cast Islamic script pastille.

The base is of exceptional sculptural and artistic importance: a richly banded onyx socle supporting elaborately cast and finely cold-painted Vienna bronze mounts modeled as cascading Oriental carpets. These bronzes are executed with extraordinary precision, their intricate geometric and floral patterns rendered in vivid polychrome, with fringed edges and naturalistic draping that convincingly simulate soft textile forms.

Of particular note is Doré’s exceptional attention to naturalistic detail. Along the lower register of the vase, just above the base, the artist has incorporated a finely textured, sand-like application—subtly built into the surface—to evoke the granular quality of the desert floor. This remarkable detail enhances the illusionistic effect of the composition, demonstrating a level of artistic commitment and realism rarely encountered in painted porcelain.

The onyx base is further signed “André Doré / 2004” and fitted with an additional Islamic script pastille, completing the work as a cohesive and sculptural whole.

This is unequivocally a one-of-a-kind exhibition piece—uniting early 20th-century Sèvres craftsmanship with a bold, museum-quality contemporary intervention. Its scale, subject matter, and technical virtuosity place it within the highest tier of modern decorative arts, recalling the grand tradition of international exposition works while remaining entirely unique in execution.

A commanding and intellectually rich object, Prayers in the Desert is ideally suited for a distinguished private collection, museum setting, or a refined interior of significant stature.
