Antique Chinese Mother-of-Pearl & Bone Snuff Bottle

$ 880
  • Description
    A mixture of finely powdered tobacco, herbs, and spices, snuff was introduced to China in the 17th century by Western diplomats. Initially reserved for ranking members of Qing-dynasty society, the practice provided an opportunity to display one's refined aesthetic through collectible snuff bottles.

    This late 19th century snuff bottle is hand-carved of mother-of-pearl and bone for a soft color palette and a delicate, feminine aesthetic. The petite bottle has a wide, oblong form and is finely etched with flowers and butterflies, with orchids on one side and spider chrysanthemums on the other. Carved bone elements comprise the neck and base and trace the outline of the the rounded sides. The footed base is etched with a maker's mark and the neck stoppered with a jadeite cap complete with a bone snuff spoon. Shimmering with iridescent color, the bottle makes for a delightful accent to a bookcase or the beginning of a lifelong collection.
