Pair Han-Style Green Glazed Dogs
-
Description
This is a great pair of Chinese Green Glazed dog figures on plinths. The dogs date to the early to mid 20th century and are marked "Hong Kong" on the bottoms. Both dogs are in very good condition with the think fragile glazes mostly intact. Figures and urns such as these with green glazes and pottery/terracotta bodies evolved during the Han Dynasty c. 20 - 250 C.E. and were burial items and not intended for household use as the thin lead glazes were toxic. More common examples of Han green glazed pottery include the parrots on rocks figures, urns and vases with the dogs being much more unusual. The dogs would make outstanding eye-catchers on bookcases or wonderful table decorations.
