Description
Pair of Cornish Serpentine stone urn vases
English, 20th Century
Height 20.5cm, diameter 8cm
This pair of very interesting vases is crafted from very fine Cornish serpentine, a beautiful stone found at the Southern point of the Lizard peninsula in Cornwall, England. The vases are crafted in the classical concave shape of urns. They are adorned with a band decoration at the neck and the stem, adding a subtle touch of elegance to the piece, while maintaining a sober and dignified look.
Both are formed of rich, dark-red, Serpentine stone, through which are scattered various blotches of grey-green and grey exemplifying the very interesting characteristics of the Serpentine stone. This stone is made of hydrated magnesium silicate and its often-blotched pattern, like the one we see in this pair, alike a serpent's skin, giving the stone its name. Furthermore, according to popular beliefs, serpentine stone has meditative properties, often thought to provide a clearing of thought.
Of unassuming design, in order to display first and foremost the fine qualities of the natural rock, they are an excellent decorative addition to any interior. -
