Description
Pair of enamel and gilt bronze altar candlesticks
French, 19th Century
Height 89.5cm, width 59cm, depth 18cm
Finely worked in gilt bronze, and delicately enamelled, this impressive pair of altar candlesticks is the work of an exceptionally skilled craftsman. Built in the Baroque style, each candelabrum has seven lights arranged in a triangular shape, each of which emerges from intricately scrolling branches attached to a triangular frame; the frame being beautifully enamelled with turquoise floral motifs. Inside the frame there is more intricately scrolling foliate gilt bronze, with an enamelled cross in the centre.
Each candelabrum is supported by a central gilt bronze stem engraved with complex decorations, and rests on a tri-form support cast in the form of three mythical creatures.
These fine candelabra display an innovative design style and a high level of attention to detail. -
