Description
Two Ethiopian Orthodox processional crosses (meskel) in pierced brass, cast and incised brass, of differing sizes and related design. The cross-shaped bodies contain interlaced strapwork and latticework, with expanded terminals composed of circular interlace, angular knots, and small looped projections. Incised geometric borders articulate the arms. Ethiopia, Late 19th to Early 20th Century
The larger cross has an openwork square at its center. The smaller cross has a central panel incised with a cross on one face and a winged figure on the other, probably an angel. Paired openwork loops flank each shaft above a tapered socket for mounting on a processional staff. Both are raised on a later blackened steel stand with hammered conical supports of differing heights, which allows the crosses to be displayed together or singly. There are old solder repairs to the lower section of the smaller cross, and wear consistent with age and liturgical use.
Height: 29 in. (74 cm.)
Width: 24 in. (61 cm.)
Depth: 10 in. (25 cm.)
Provenance: From a John Wheatman-designed Presidio Heights residence, San Francisco. -
