Description
Pair of Louis XVI style 19th century gilt bronze candlesticks. Finely incised with leaf and berry, flower and shell decoration.
With downward tapering square columns terminating in a square plinths decorated with acanthus leaves and encircled by a laurel wreath.
France, third quarter of the 19th century.
Ferdinand Barbedienne's foundry in Paris, one of the foremost of the 19th century was created in 1839 and perfected new chemical methods for a richness in colour and finish. His factory was known for it's prolific supply specialising in decorative items such as candlesticks, as well as copies of antiquities in what has been cited as a democratisation of art.
