Pair of Japanese Cloisonné Enamel Vases with Dragon and Phoenix, Attributed Ando

A richly ornamented and technically accomplished pair of Japanese cloisonné enamel vases from the Meiji period (1868–1912), attributed to the esteemed Ando workshop—among the most influential and innovative producers of cloisonné during the late nineteenth century.

Each vase is executed with remarkable precision and density of design, the surfaces entirely enveloped in intricate geometric patterning, stylized wave motifs, and scrolling floral ornament. The upper registers are finely articulated with bands of repeating geometric designs interspersed with chrysanthemum blossoms and stylized elements, demonstrating a high level of discipline and uniformity in the cloisonné wirework across both examples.

The bodies are structured with shaped reserves featuring a dragon and a phoenix—two of the most powerful and symbolically resonant motifs in Japanese decorative arts. The dragon is rendered in dynamic movement, emerging through flame-like forms with pronounced energy and force, while the phoenix is depicted in graceful flight, embodying elegance and renewal. Together, they create a harmonious balance of strength and refinement, a pairing deeply rooted in traditional iconography.

Surrounding these central reserves are densely composed fields of diaper patterns, wave motifs, and ornamental borders, executed with exceptional control and consistency. The necks are encircled by further geometric and stylized bands, while the bases are finished with repeating borders that anchor the overall design.
