Description
This pair of guardian lions features the bold, open-mouthed expression and ornamental detailing characteristic of traditional Foo Dogs, with their bodies rendered in vibrant green and warm golden tones. Each figure sits in an alert pose on a rectangular base, displaying the intricate carved details and dimensional presence that made these protective symbols popular throughout Chinese art and architecture.
Circa 20th century or earlier, these pieces reflect the sancai pottery tradition, a glazing technique that typically employs three colors to create visual depth and richness. The style draws from centuries of Chinese decorative arts, where such guardian figures were placed in pairs to ward off negative energy and bring good fortune to homes and temples.
