Description
Pair of Large Rococo Porcelain Vases with Painted Madonnas
English, 19th Century
Height 60cm, width 31cm, depth 26cm
Of flattened baluster form, with trellis-pierced necks and scrolling acanthus handles, these beautiful vases were made in England in the 19th century, and are richly enhanced with extensive and elaborate gilding throughout.
They are painted to the front with circular panels, that depict, on one, the 'Madonna with Grapes' of 1640 by the French Classical artist, known for his portraits and mythological scenes, Pierre Mignard, and on the other, the 'Madonna della Seggiola' of 1513-14 by Raphael, a highly important religious work of the Italian Renaissance that is currently on display in the Palazzo Pitti, Florence.
The reverses are painted with flower bouquets, beautifully executed with wonderfully rich and vibrant colour palettes, and to the base they are further painted flowers, set within the scrolling Rococo style embellishments. -
