Description
This incredible pair of sancai-glazed Chinese roof tiles were once installed as part of the elaborate roof of a Ming-dynasty temple or grand courtyard home. Dated to the 17th century or earlier, the long, rectangular tiles would have decorated the horizontal ridge that comprised the highest point of the roof. Each panel is composed of two parts and is lavishly decorated in high relief with a mythical dragon, a fearsome guardian of the home and a symbol of strength and power. The sinuous dragons are surrounded with leafy foliage and flower blossoms, one with a pink peony, a symbol of spring and beauty, and the other clutching a lotus, a symbol of summer and perfection. A stunning example of Ming-dynasty ceramic art, the tiles have been set on custom steel mounts for display as one-of-a-kind tabletop sculptures. // Depth: 3.5"
