Description
18221: Pair of Minton Gilt-Decorated Ivory-Ground Porcelain Vases
English, late 19th Century
Height 19 cm, Width 11 cm, Depth 10 cm (each)
$8,250
This elegant pair of Minton porcelain vases is modelled in a refined ovoid form and decorated in a classical neoclassical style against a warm ivory ground. Each vase is finished with a gently flared gilt rim above a finely articulated shoulder enriched with gilt rosettes, a bold Greek key band, and delicate geometric detailing.
The main body is adorned with flowing classical ornament, including trailing acanthus leaves, floral swags, and suspended bellflower garlands, all rendered with exceptional clarity and decorative balance. A further band of stylised gilt flame motifs encircles the lower section, resting above a narrow gilded border that completes the composition. The twin ring handles, suspended from foliate mounts, add a sculptural and architectural accent that reinforces the classical inspiration of the design.
The decoration combines raised gilding and fine painted gilt work, creating a rich interplay of texture and light typical of Minton’s finest late Victorian production. The restrained ivory ground provides an elegant contrast to the elaborate gilded ornamentation, enhancing the overall sense of refinement and symmetry.
Each vase bears the puce printed crowned globe mark inscribed “MINTONS”, along with impressed factory marks to the base, confirming production at the celebrated Stoke-on-Trent manufactory during a peak period of the firm’s output. -
