Pair of Satsuma earthenware Meiji period vases

$ 8,250
  • Description
    Pair of Satsuma earthenware Meiji period vases
    Japanese, Early 20th Century
    Height 36cm, width 23cm, depth 15cm

    The pair of outstanding vases was crafted in early 20th century Japan, during the Meiji period. Various decorating techniques have been used by the craftsmen to ensure the pieces emanate luxury and wealth.

    The unusual, tapering shape of the vase bodies is painted with a selection of illustrations and motifs. The two larger sides include groups of noblemen dressed in traditional clothing, surrounded by a sea of gilt decoration. The smaller sides feature a central white medallion filled with gilt nature-inspired motifs surrounded by several geometric polychrome patterns. Both vases are topped by a rectangular cover surmounted by a foo dog with its paws resting on a ball. These are meant to protect the owner from evil spirits and the ball symbolises the Earth, which the foo dogs have control over. Twin handles feature on both sides of each vase. These are formed in the shape of Japanese figures, possibly the karako (children).

    Four shaped and splayed feet with scrolling gilt decoration support each vase.

    Of a very attention-grabbing design, executed to a high standard, this pair of vases would make an outstanding addition to one’s collection.
