Description
Large marble sculpture of Silenus and his entourage by Paul Brou
Dutch, late 19th Century
Height 52cm, width 120cm, depth 56cm
This large and spectacular sculpture depicts Silenus and his merry band of Bacchic companions, all of whom are depicted in their very early youth. Silenus, who rides a donkey, slips off into an inebriated slumber as his fellow revellers carouse with cups of wine and fistfuls of grapes. The group is carved from white marble with superb precision: the slightest of details, whether individual grapes or strands of hair, have been carefully rendered. Moreover, the sense of animation and movement is superb.
The sculpture is by the Dutch artist Paul Brou, and is signed 'PAUL BROU' to the front of the base.
