Description
This rare brass vase, designed by Pierre Forssell and produced by Skultuna in Sweden during the 1950s, exemplifies the convergence of modernist formalism and artisanal brass craftsmanship typical of mid-century Scandinavian design. Forssell, a leading figure in Swedish decorative arts, was known for his ability to translate utilitarian forms into refined sculptural objects, often exploring the interplay of geometry, surface, and light.
The vase comprises two distinct sections: a perforated, shallow dish that serves as the main vessel, and a cylindrical base that supports it. The upper section is defined by a dense field of circular perforations arranged in concentric rings, which give the piece its visual complexity and tactile appeal. These openings not only articulate the surface but also interact with surrounding light, casting subtle patterns of shadow that animate the object in varying conditions. The top’s organic texture and shallow curvature evoke a functional yet decorative interpretation of a floral frog or ikebana-inspired structure.
In contrast to the perforated top, the base is smooth and unadorned, with a polished brass finish that provides structural and visual grounding. This juxtaposition between textured and polished surfaces is a hallmark of Forssell’s design language, creating a tension that heightens the object’s sculptural qualities.
The brass has developed a soft, golden patina that enhances the material’s warmth and depth, with subtle oxidation marks that affirm the piece’s age and authenticity. These natural signs of wear are consistent with the period and add to its aesthetic integrity.
The underside of the vase bears the Skultuna 1607 hallmark, a mark of provenance and quality associated with one of Sweden’s oldest and most esteemed brass foundries. Skultuna’s long-standing collaboration with Forssell during the mid-20th century resulted in a number of now-iconic decorative objects, all marked by precision, durability, and a restrained elegance.
Measuring 16 cm in diameter and 10 cm in height (6.3 × 3.9 inches), the vase is compact and balanced, equally suited as a functional floral vessel or as a standalone sculptural piece. It remains an enduring example of Pierre Forssell’s design philosophy—where minimal ornamentation, material refinement, and geometric clarity converge to form a timeless expression of Scandinavian modernism.
