Pair of Safari Easy Chairs in Beech and Leather by Poul Hundevad, 1950s

$ 6,604
  • Description
    This pair of safari easy chairs, designed by Poul Hundevad and produced by Vamdrup Stolefabrik in Denmark during the 1950s, exemplifies the balance of portability, comfort, and craftsmanship central to Scandinavian modern design. Influenced by the iconic British campaign furniture and the pioneering safari chair models of the early 20th century, Hundevad’s interpretation reflects a distinctly Danish sensibility—clean-lined, functional, and materially expressive.

    Each chair features a solid beechwood frame with gently curved legs that form a characteristic X-shaped base, allowing for a foldable structure that prioritizes lightness and ease of movement. This construction enables the chairs to be disassembled or collapsed without tools, a hallmark of the safari typology. The beech has developed a soft, warm patina, enhancing the natural beauty of the wood and affirming the piece’s mid-century provenance.

    The seat and backrest are made from the original beige canvas, a breathable and durable textile that aligns with the utilitarian spirit of the design while adding a tactile contrast to the smooth wooden frame. The seat is suspended within the frame to allow for slight movement, improving comfort and emphasizing the design’s relaxed nature.

    Accentuating the canvas and wood are natural leather straps used to reinforce the armrests and secure the backrest. These straps, affixed with brass hardware, exhibit a handsome patina that attests to their age and authenticity. The leather’s natural aging contributes both visual depth and historical character to the chairs.

    Measuring 57 cm in width, 60 cm in depth, and 69 cm in height, with a seat height of 37 cm (22.4 x 23.6 x 27.2 inches, seat height 14.6 inches), these chairs are compact yet generously proportioned for comfort. Their modest dimensions and foldable structure make them suitable for a variety of interiors, from relaxed living areas to curated reading spaces.

    The pair remains in very good vintage condition, with visible signs of wear and aging consistent with their use and era. This includes a well-preserved patina on the wood, leather, and canvas, all of which enhance their historical value without compromising functionality.
