Description
This elegant Art Deco flapper sculpture was realized by the acclaimed artist Pierre La Faguays, circa 1930. Realized in bronze, it depicts a nude lady of idealized Greek proportions in the midst putting on one of her Roman sandals atop of an exotic marble plinth base in variegated hues of caramel and cafe au lait. Full of dynamic energy and perfectly encapsulating the aesthetic of the period, this piece is sure to delight discerning Art Deco collectors with an appreciation for first-rate design objects.
Raised in Nantes, France, La Faguays was among the most esteemed artists of his generation. He awarded the French Medal of Honor in 1927. Of Le Faguay's work, a critic opined: "Most of the decorative bronzes that I have seen from the Art Deco era (such as those of Ferdinand Preiss and Demetre Chiparus) reflect Jazz Age subject matter, but were essentially academic in style. Yet here, Le Faguays takes the three-dimensional medium of sculpture and adopts the heavy lines and two-dimensionality of Art Deco graphic design." This sculpture is signed on the bottom of the base "Made in France" and "La Faguays" on the side of the top edge. It is in excellent vintage condition.
France, circa 1930.
