Rare Fold-Out Writing Box
English, mid 19th c.
Mahogany, mahogany veneer, pattern inlay, brass hardware.
Over-all in excellent condition, minor imperfections.
Provenance: from a prominent Massachusetts collection.
This rare, well-constructed, compact traveling desk-top box made of figured mahogany is embellished with finely executed inlay patterns of pateras and quarter fans. The hinged top opens to a fall-front, leather embossed writing surface with fitted compartments, ink well, letter holder, letter opener and a tablet. This writing box was most likely made for a traveling doctor.
