Description
A rare and visually commanding pair of Japanese cloisonné enamel vases from the Meiji period (1868–1912), executed at a level of technical and artistic sophistication reserved for the finest works of the late nineteenth century.
The bodies are distinguished by an exceptional transparent red enamel ground—among the most difficult colors to successfully achieve in cloisonné. This luminous surface, achieved through multiple precisely controlled firings, retains a remarkable clarity and depth, with a jewel-like brilliance that shifts subtly under changing light. Such transparent red grounds are highly coveted, as even minor inconsistencies in kiln temperature can result in clouding or loss of translucency.
Each vase is elaborately decorated with alternating shield-shaped panels, masterfully composed to create both visual and symbolic contrast. One panel presents a rich green enamel ground with butterflies amidst scrolling floral ornament—delicate, animated, and refined. Opposing panels feature powerful dragons emerging through stylized cloud forms, set against a shimmering brown aventurine ground. The juxtaposition of butterfly and dragon—grace and strength—reflects a sophisticated decorative language deeply rooted in Japanese artistic tradition.
Encircling the shoulders is a richly ornamented band set on a goldstone aventurine ground, densely worked with intricate cloisonné wire forming lotus motifs. The precision and density of the wirework create a sculptural, almost draped effect—an extraordinary demonstration of control and technical mastery. The necks are finished with finely executed geometric borders and tightly disciplined wire patterns, reinforcing the overall harmony and balance of the design.
Works of this caliber reflect the pinnacle of Meiji period cloisonné production, when Japanese artisans—particularly those working in Nagoya—pushed the medium to its highest level of refinement, combining technical innovation with a distinctly elegant aesthetic.
Offered as a true pair, these vases possess both immediate visual impact and lasting significance—objects of scale, rarity, and presence, equally suited for important collections or grand interiors.
