Description
Pair Georgian Silver boxes London 1803 Robert Hennell 1. The cushion shape boxes of substantial weight, plain with engraved coat of arms and motto Aspiro ( I aspire). Boxes each measure 4.25 x 3.125 x 1.60 inches. Total weight: 626 grams (20.13 oz). Full hallmarks to base, lion passant and date letter to interior cover. Lovely original patina. The firm Hennell Ltd is a long-lasting family business of silversmiths founded in 1736 by David Hennell (1712-1785). His son Robert Hennell I (1741-1811) joined the company in partnership in 1763 and became sole owner of the business after his father’s retirement. He was soon joined by his son Samuel Hennell (1778-1837) and his nephew Robert Hennell II. During the 19th century the firm began branching into jewellery manufacturing, largely at the instigation of Robert’s son (also called Robert) who had joined the business. They created silverware of the highest quality for wealthy clients and received many remarkable commissions including that from Admiral Lord Nelson in 1799 for a silver tea service to be used on board HMS Victory. European Royalty frequented the business, Queen Victoria was a customer as were King George V and his wife Queen Mary. The business remained a family affair until the 1970s when it was sold, but their wonderful silverware and jewels stand as testament to one of London’s earliest silversmithing and jewellery manufacturing firms.
