Description
Very large Austrian antique painted porcelain vases by Royal Vienna
Austrian, Late 19th Century
Height 180cm, diameter 46cm
An exceptional pair of late 19th century porcelain vases, these fine works were produced by the distinguished Royal Vienna Porcelain Manufactory - Europe’s second-oldest porcelain workshop, founded in 1718.
Matching in form and scale, both vases are adorned with finely executed, hand-painted friezes that wrap around the bodies. The central panels depict dynamic mythological scenes inspired by Roman legend, featuring gods and goddesses such as Venus. Rich, saturated tones bring the figures to life, set strikingly against a deep maroon ground. The titles of these mythic episodes are elegantly inscribed below the painted tableaux.
Additional friezes, painted in pastel pinks and soft yellows, embellish the necks, shoulders, and bases. These are further enriched with intricate gilded foliage and ornamental motifs, enhancing the overall opulence of the design.
Each vase is surmounted by a domed lid, finished with an ornate ormolu pinecone finial that adds height and a regal flourish. They are supported by circular plinths, coordinated in colour and style, which mirror the decorative elements seen across the main bodies, underscoring the high level of artistry typical of Austrian porcelain at the time.
Both pieces are stamped with the iconic blue beehive mark of Royal Vienna.
The vases would make a remarkable centrepiece in any fine porcelain collection or interior rooted in classical elegance.
