Description
Very large pair of antique Rococo and Sèvres style porcelain vases
French, Late 19th Century
Height 163cm, width 53cm, depth 48cm
Crafted in the style of the celebrated Sèvres manufactory, this exceptional pair of very large vases reflects the finest traditions of French porcelain. Founded in 1740 in Vincennes at the behest of Louis XV and Madame de Pompadour, and relocated to Sèvres in 1756, the Manufacture nationale de Sèvres remains one of Europe’s most esteemed porcelain producers, prized by collectors for the unparalleled quality of its creations.
The vases present closely matched amphora-shaped forms with removable lids. The hand-painted central scenes are framed by elegant ovals. One depicts Venus amidst Cupid and cherubs in a lush pastoral setting, while the other presents two lovers surrounded by cherubs in a flowering garden. The subject matter and surroundings exemplify Rococo’s charm, celebrating joy, playfulness, flirtation, and a sense of mischievous delight, reinforced by the cherubs, vibrant foliage, and intimate interactions.
The rich cobalt-blue porcelain is further enriched with gilded floral motifs and classical ornamentation. Finely chased ormolu mounts accentuate the rims, handles, and bases, including winged female busts and acanthus leaf detailing, while the gilded bronze bases are engraved with Louis XV-style motifs, demonstrating exceptional artistry throughout.
The porcelain bears spurious Sèvres-style manufactory mark and painter’s marks of Georges Maxant and Morant.
Exquisitely executed and visually commanding, this pair is an extraordinary addition for collectors of fine porcelain and decorative arts. -
