CoBrA Art Sculpture 'Oizal' by Serge Vandercam - 1974

Sculpture in ebonised wood by Serge Vandercam. Can be seen as a vanguard piece of the contemporary functional art scene. This is the most monumental and versatile sculpture of his Oizal series. It is a one-of-a-kind piece.

Vandercam (Copenhagen, 1924 – Wavre, 10 March 2005) was a Danish-born Belgian painter, photographer, sculptor and ceramist associated with the CoBrA group. Serge Vandercam (born 1924 in Copenhagen, Denmark and deceased 2005 in Waver, Belgium) was the son of parents, whose roots can be found in Italy, Turkey, and Belgium. Vandercam was painter, photographer, poet, ceramist, and sculptor. Even though he was born in Copenhagen, he was Belgian citizen and familiar with a broad cultural heritage up from his earliest childhood.

In 1949, he became member of CoBrA movement, where he was mostly engaged with abstract photography. He contributed to the large-scale Liège CoBrA exhibition of 1951. After his CoBrA phase, Vandercam started creating abstract-expressionistic works in the 1950s. He also made several movies, and was concerned with ceramics and statuary, first carving wood and later changing to stone. Being a visual artist, Vandercam frequently experimented with new materials, and enjoyed working with poets like Joseph Noiret, Christian Dotremont, and Hugo Claus.
