Description
Set of two large green glass gilt bronze mounted vases
French, 20th Century
Height 153cm, width 50cm, depth 53cm
Pairing gilt bronze with striped green glass, these grand French vases exude the elegance of Neoclassical design, subtly touched by Rococo charm. Their traditional ovoid structure is accentuated by the unique green striping, bestowing a remarkable visual appeal.
The vases are set upon intricately designed square ormolu bases which are embellished with angled corners and rich Neoclassical gilt patterns. These include the flowing drapery, the iconic fleur de lis, and the delicate acanthus leaves.
Ascending from the base are ornate gilt bronze details that introduce the elegant ormolu handles. Shaped like acanthus leaves, they transform into grand Roman columns. Above, a lyre design stands on each side of the vases, held in place by gilt-bronze cherubs with detailed tasselled reins. The cherubs and their draped clothing are impressively detailed and mark the visual appeal of the pieces. Between the cherubs majestically drapes a gilt bronze flower garland, adding a touch of opulence that changes the vases’ perceived shape.
Ornate lids crowned by ormolu bird duos finish off each vase, reflecting the deep attention to detail in their craftsmanship. While the design pays homage to Neoclassical tradition, playful Rococo elements are interwoven. The grand and animated nature of the gilt bronze mounts offers a delightful contrast to the tranquil elegance of the striped glass, making these vases not just ornamental pieces but timeless symbols of French artistic excellence and testaments to the diverse history of the country’s decorative arts. -
