Description
Pair of large Italian Carrara marble putti sculptures by Stampanoni
Italian, Late 19th Century
Boy: Height 89cm, width 31cm, depth 25cm
Girl: Height 83cm, width 31cm, depth 33cm
This pair of fine Carrara marble sculptures depict a pair of children, or putti, and were made in Rome by the artist 'Ao. Stampanoni' in the late 19th century. Exceptionally carved, and of near matching height and mounted on similar bases, one of the pieces, the boy, is modelled as a gleefully grinning child holding a coin purse in one hand. His companion, on the other hand, is a young girl, who is wrapped in a cloak, shrinking away from the cold, and who represents winter.
The undeniable skill of the artist, in combination with the choice of prize Carrara marble and the delightful composition make these works wonderful decorative works of sculpture. They are both signed, situated, and dated, one to the reverse one to the front, 'Ao. Stampanoni Roma 1862.'
