Tiffany Edwardian Fairyland Vases with Brazenly Corporeal Wood Sylphs

Sold Sold
  • Description
Pair of Edwardian sterling silver vases. Made by Tiffany & Co. in New York, ca 1913.

Each: Conical neck with ruffled mouth rim mounted to globular bowl on raised foot. Allover spot hammering. Mounted to bowl is cast figure of brazenly corporeal wood sylph, seated on folds of overhanging drapery with only thigh covered. Reclining on one arm, she raises the other to an out-of-reach cherub, their hands grasping at the same bit of cloth. Possibly allegorical. Possibly practical, since both need to cover up. On one vase the cherub grips the rim with tensile strength while on the other he tumbles upside down. Minor differences also in the female figures, though both exhibit a casual voluptuousness with only their wings suggestive of ethereality. Classicism with a touch of fairyland.

Fully marked including maker’s stamp, pattern nos. 18475 and 18568 (both first produced in 1913), and director’s letter m.

    Approximate overall dimensions: H 13 x W 7 1/2 x D 6 in. Heavy total weight: 85 troy ounces. #CA509
