Early Decorated Cabinet Vase with Applied Foot

Dating from the mid-1890s, shortly after Louis Comfort Tiffany opened his private glassblowing factory in Corona, Queens, this Tiffany Favrile Glass Cabinet Vase displays many of the hallmarks of the early period of Tiffany’s glass production, including the rare addition of an applied foot.

The interior of this vase was cased in a thin layer of creamy white glass beneath a layer of transparent pale yellow glass. A delicate “zipper” motif in creamy white floating on the surface of the vase forms a series of vertical stripes, the decoration rising up the body from the foot into the shoulder. Each stripe corresponds with a series of rounded bumps at the shoulder before spreading up into the neck. The vase rests on an applied foot with scrolling detail and subtle surface iridescence.

This rare and fascinating example of early Tiffany glass is inscribed on the underside with signature and date code.
