Favrile Pottery Vase with Crystalline Glaze

  • Description
The simplicity of this rare monumental Tiffany Favrile Pottery Vase highlights Tiffany Studios’ variegated mossy green glaze, this example accented by crystalline inclusions throughout.

The squat baluster form, possibly inspired by Asian ceramics, was likely initially conceived by Tiffany’s designers for use as a lamp base as the bulbous body and wide mouth would have accommodated a standardized inset fuel canister; however, this vase – which is not drilled – was always intended to serve as a decorative object.

Two examples of this form, one in a similar mossy green glaze, were part of the personal collection of Louis Comfort Tiffany and were prominently displayed atop the monumental fireplace in the Living Hall at Laurelton Hall, Tiffany’s estate in Oyster Bay. These are now in the permanent collection of the Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art in Winter Park, Florida, and are illustrated in the 2007 exhibition catalogue “Louis Comfort Tiffany and Laurelton Hall: An Artist’s Country Estate.”

This rare example of Tiffany Favrile Pottery is signed on the underside.
