A Wonderful Contemporary Copper Lionfish Sculpture by Tony Evans on a Limestone Plinth

The fish captured diving towards the seabed and mounted on a limestone plinth for contrast and realistic feel of sand and seabed. Executed in copper, Evans' favoured material for his work, the sculpture manages to convey an incredible range of information relating to the colour and texture of its subject through the use of matt and polished surfaces, fretted sections and applied highlights. The fish is remarkably alive and there is a real sense of movement throughout the piece, making it a joy to look at and to live with.

Tony Evans (b.1964)

A member of the Association of Animal Artists, Evans only turned to sculpture in his 50s, having retired early from his previous job and gone to university to take a fine arts degree. A Liverpool native, Evans works almost exclusively in copper and animal subjects make up the vast majority of his work. The lionfish is a recurring subject for the artist and he has produced examples in a variety of poses and in patinated as well as polished copper. These days Evans is officially retired and no longer accepts commissions unless they tempt him for some particular reason. His website is no longer active but an archive of his work may be seen on his Facebook page. Works by the artist are in several interesting private collections including pieces he produced for Cherie Blair and the corporate collection of the Lever Fabergé company.
