Description
A ceramic bowl by Japanese American artist Toshiko Takaezu (American, 1922 - 2011). The deep form bowl is of the typical form of Chawan and features a wheel-turned body supported by a short round foot ring. The wall is relatively thinly potted. The interior surface showcases Toshiko's iconic expressive glaze pattern with a swirling wind-like strokes, ocher on the deep brown. On the exterior wall, the background color is a rich dark brown transitioning to black, in a contrasting matt finish. Lighter color glaze of ocher and brown with a metallic sheen were applied along the rim, dripping down to the mottled background. The color palette of this bowl is somber and earthy, yet the abstract pattern the artist created spontaneously, subtle as they are, displays a quiet drama if one observes closely. The color shift is fluent and speedy, exemplifying the wabi-sabi spirit of the artist's work. The base is incised with the artist's cypher.
