Description
Two Orientalist gilt and patinated bronze sculptures after Bergman
Austrian, Early 20th Century
Height 39cm, width 13.5cm, depth 13cm
These beautiful sculptures were crafted in Austria in the early 20th Century. They are signed, ‘Nam Greb’, after the famous ‘Bergman’ Viennese bronze foundry.
Cast in the Bergman style, the Orientalist sculptures depict two women in Egyptian dress. Both figures wear long, draped gowns and headscarves. One woman carries two vases, one held in her right hand at her side, the other lifted with her left to her shoulder. She gazes off slightly to her right. The second figure clutches her dress with her left hand and raises her right hand. She wears an ornamental headpiece, and has lowered her eyes away from the viewer’s gaze. Both figures stand on short shaped bases.
The bronzes have been finished with a dark patina, and aspects of the figures’ clothing and accessories have been highlighted by gilding.
Since the women’s poses perfectly balance one another, the bronzes will look perfect placed either side of a vase, or some other fine decorative piece. -
