Description
Two very large French silvered bronze vases
French, 20th Century
Height 115cm, width 68cm, depth 48cm
Standing 1.15 meters (45 inches) tall, these grand Neoclassical style vases are designed to make an impact. Crafted from silvered bronze, the vases are truly magnificent works, which have been expertly cast and hammered, creating beautiful relief ornament.
The necks and shoulders of these amphora form vases are decorated with foliate patterns, including scrolled leaves and stylised anthemions. Classical style figurative scenes, depicting people carrying water urns and freshly-caught fish, decorate the ovoid vase bodies. The vases’ waisted stems are fluted, their tops and bases ornamented by bands of scrolled foliage. Each vase is set with two handles, which extend from the shoulders to the base. These are cast as half-length nude women, clutching swags of foliage. -
