“True craftspeople do much more than just make things. They live within their work, feel the aliveness of the materials.” – VH
Vivika and Otto Heino were among America’s most significant studio potters of the 20th century. Renowned for their masterful collaborations, Vivika was an Alfred University graduate and teacher who shared her expertise with students at USC, Chouinard Art Institute, and numerous other institutions. Otto began studying under Vivika at the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen after his service in World War II. The couple established their workshop, known as the Pottery, in Ojai, California in 1973, where they produced works known for their simple forms and exceptional glazes. Their home in Ojai was built by former student Beatrice Wood, a notable ceramicist in her own right. The Heinos’ pieces are held in the collections of the Smithsonian Institution and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. -
