Description
'War and Peace', pair of antique Italian marble figures
Italian, c. 1740
Larger figure: Height 48cm, width 48cm, depth 24cm
Smaller figure: Height 46cm, width 45cm, depth 23cm
These beautiful antique marble figures are truly timeless works of sculpture: though they are almost 300 years old, they will still make joyous additions to a Classical or antiques-inspired interior. The figures depict reclining putti with dogs, and each figure is an allegorical representation of War and Peace: War with a quiver of arrows and Peace with a bunch of grapes.
These kinds of allegorical uses of depictions putti were popular among elite households in the 18th Century, when these figures were made. The putti figures are shown on naturalistic bases. -
