    Wedgwood Black Basalt Bust of Milton, England, 19th century, mounted atop a waisted circular socle, impressed title “E.W. Wyon,” Edward William Wyon (1811-1885) and factory mark.

    John Milton, (1608 – 1674,) was an English poet, pamphleteer, and historian, considered the most significant English author after William Shakespeare.

    Milton is best known for Paradise Lost, widely regarded as the greatest epic poem in English. Together with Paradise Regained and Samson Agonistes, it confirms Milton’s reputation as one of the greatest English poets. 5

    Wedgwood Black Basalt is a hard, dense, fine-grained stoneware, which Josiah Wedgwood used for portrait medallions, seals, vases and urns, busts, tea ware, and other items. The busts and figures were made to emulate old bronze statues. Basalt has been produced continuously since its introduction in 1768.

    Edward William Wyon (1811-1885), Medallist; Wyon studied at the Royal Academy schools from 1829, and became a celebrated sculptor, exhibiting at the Royal Academy regularly from 1831 to 1876. Among his commissions were works intended for reproduction by Wedgwood as well as numerous portrait busts.\

    Edward William Wyon Son and pupil of Thomas Wyon the Elder, he specialised in portrait busts, and sculpted several busts and profiles for reproduction in jasperware by Wedgewood.
