OKIMONO OF A WILD BOAR
Japan, Meiji Period | Patinated bronze over carved hardwood base | Signed "Gyokko" to underside of boar
Item # 301COR20S This remarkable sculpture was designed and executed in the Meiji period (1868-1912) and depicts a Wild Boar. It is elegantly presented on a finely carved and lacquered hardwood base. The sculpture itself is meticulously cast and brought to life with expertly chiseled and chased details, the surface detailed with a delightful stippled texturing throughout. The underside bears a raised relief signature by the highly esteemed sculptor Akasofu Gyokko. Notably, Gyokko is renowned for his exceptional craftsmanship and is recognized for his extensive repertoire of impressive animals, particularly birds, as well as his numerous Samurai figures. His works consistently exhibit expert chiseling and are of extraordinarily good quality.
