A collection of four Mexican modern silver box with inset amethyst cabochon top by William Spratling (1900-1967), all variously hallmarked and dated to circa 1940-1946. The small collection includes three pill boxes and an operable lipstick holder, each with a round amethyst cabochon top that display slightly different color and inclusion.
The sizes of the pill boxes are approximately 1.25"dia x 0.8"h, 0.75"dia x 1"h and 0.5"dia x 1.5"h. The size of the lipstick holder is 0.75"dia x 2.2"h.
Spratling is an American designer and silversmith who designed and studio-made modernistic silver pieces in Taxco Mexico. He was credited with putting modern design inspired by indigenous art and culture on an international stage. His work forged a new identity in Mexican silver studio industry and influenced numerous designers and silversmiths. -
