Japanese Contemporary Ceramic Sculpture Kayho Yoshikawa Masamichi
-
Description
A richly glazed ceramic sculpture called Kayho (Luxuriant Effigy) by Japanese ceramic artist Yoshikawa Masamichi (1946-). The highly abstract piece was hand built with thick slabs with intentional irregularity and covered with a thick bluish-green Seihakuji glaze that drips like mercury down toward the base. The glaze that the artist applied invokes a sense of purity that one found in the celadon from Chinese Song Dynasty and Korean Joseon period. The idea of the abstract form of pottery house was inspired by Chinese pottery building models made for burial from the Han dynasty. Under the piece, there is an elaborate under the glaze painting of his abstract calligraphy design as shown.
For a similar piece see The Collection in Metropolitan Museum Accession Number: 2017.166.23.
Provenance: from a private collection in UK.
Born in Kanagawa Prefecture near Tokyo and based in Tokoname, Yoshikawa creates ceramic with seihakuji glaze in his signature style that is difference from the more delicate works by other seihakuji artists such as Fukami Sueharu and Yagi Akira. His glaze is thick with pooling and dripping and his form more abstract and robust. -
