Description
Zebra stone and silver bird model
Continental, 20th Century
Height 8cm, width 9cm, depth 7cm
Expertly carved from zebra stone, the bird, most likely a wren, is sitting atop a fossilised stone base. Cleverly placed by the makers, the naturally occurring patterns on the stone model resemble those created by nature on wrens. The front part of the model is maroon coloured with speckles of brown, whereas the back part of the model the base colour transitions to beige and the speckles become darker. All around, the bird is beautifully carved to imitate features such as feather textures.
The vibrant yellow eyes stand out against the more muted colours of the rest of the piece. The stone bird’s body rests on silver legs. Where the two meet, the makers added a subtle silver gilt detailing.
This sweet bird model would make an outstanding addition to one’s collection of objects d’art. -
