17th Century Italian Baroque Embroidery Panels
-
Description
A pair of 17th century Italian Baroque textile panels, richly embroidered on maroon velvet, worked in silver and gold metallic thread. The design features scrolling vines and stylized flowers in an opulent symmetrical pattern, the threads catching the light against the deep velvet ground. Along the lower edge, an elaborately embroidered gold fringe provides a luxurious finishing touch, emphasizing the Baroque taste for grandeur and ornament. Each panel is presented in an ebonized and gilded frame. The condition is excellent. The silver thread has oxidized and has turned black, which creates a decorative contrast that highlights the thread’s intricate patterns.
