Description
Anatolian Kirsehir prayer rug with a village design
Turkish, 20th Century
Height 155cm, width 96cm
This eye-catching pictorial prayer rug was skilfully woven from wool by Turkish carpet weavers in the 20th century. Its design is typical of rugs crafted in the Turkish city of Kirsehir indicating the place of its creation.
The central mihrab (prayer niche) is adorned with rows of colourful houses and trees. This is framed by two pastel-coloured carnation patterns, a typical motif on rugs from this area. Other borders include a very geometric blue, red, and cream design extending around the central mihrab with an opening toward the bottom. The other edges are filled with further, nature-inspired floral designs. Most of the compositions are placed on a deep red background which beautifully complements the lighter shades.
Cream-coloured tassels feature on the shorter ends of the rug.
Celebrating the work of Anatolian carpet weavers, this prayer rug would be a great addition to one’s collection. -
