This ornate turn of the century antique Caucasian Shirvan rug features an intricate all-over design of multicolored, densely patterned floral abstractions surrounding three prominent diamond patterns against a field of midnight blue. A light blue border featuring a repeating boteh pattern completes the look of the antique carpets. The boteh is a staple of weaving, and adds a touch of regionality to a carpet originating from an otherwise diverse cultural crossroads. Shirvan is a historical region in the eastern Caucasus, known by this name in both Islamic and modern times. The Caucasus are a primarily mountainous region in Southern Russia bordered by the Caspian Sea and the Black Sea. Transcaucasia, an area south of the mountains, is where most rugs from the region were produced. Caucasian rugs are traditionally bright in hue, with geometric design motifs in primary colors, and are woven with a symmetrical knot.
