Antique "Peacocks" Sumak

$ 12,500
  • Description
    5'8" x 11'7" (173cm x 353cm)
    The Caucasus, Azerbaijan: Late 19th Century
    Flat-weave (kilim), "sumak" brocading technique: wool

    A fantastic antique tribal flat-weave from the Caucasus, woven in the intricate "sumak" brocading technique, featuring a highly unusual design. Mythical birds with giant tails, possibly peacocks, are hidden among the intricate motifs - such birds are often found in the pile carpets of the region, particularly those of Akstafa. The intricate border design, inspired by Kufic calligraphy, is also more common in pile weavings of the region. A great example of Caucasian weaving.
