This Chahar Mahal carpet was woven in a town workshop probably in Shalmazar by settled weavers rather than by nomadic Bakhtiari tribal folk. The foundation is cotton, the wefts are double and the handle is firm. The urban character extends to the pattern: an ivory medallion with navy corners on a rich red field, with floriated arabesques. The funky, faceted drawing indicates a provincial workshop working without scale paper cartoons. This Persian rug is a real work of folk art.
