Authentic 19th Century French Botanic Needlework

This late 19th-century needlework rug represents the classic French needlepoint craft. It was made by hand, using a sewing needle and wool yarn to create stitches on an open grid cotton fabric known as the “canvas”. This technique results in millions of individual stitches which provide an interesting visual and textural effect – needlepoint rugs are pile-less and, due to their texture, they have a slightly rustic character.

Made circa 1880, the French antique needlepoint rug carries restrained red quatrefoil flowerheads overall separated by polychrome flowerheads within a cream border of flowerheads and elegant floral vinery. The combination of motifs is very elegant, referring to traditional palatial French antique rugs of Aubusson and Savonnerie, but with an easily noticeable folk note.

In terms of workmanship, this antique French rug is second to none. It survived until this day in perfect condition, and, if maintained properly, it will serve its owners for generations without any signs of wear.
