Description
A mid-19th-century French antique fragment rug, the moss green field with scattered feathery red leaves and ivory flowerheads around a bold polychrome medallion within a sand and sage scrolling vinery border.
The French Savonnerie rugs factory, located on the site of the present Musee d’Art Moderne, inherited its name from the soap-making factory it took over at the behest of Louis XIII. From 1660 until 1743 Savonnerie was a manufacture royale, carrying out commissions for French Savonnerie rugs and carpets specifically designed for the Royal Palaces. In the 1770s, the tapestry looms at Aubusson in the Creuze Valley near Limoges were converted to produce flat-woven antique oriental rugs and carpets under royal warrant. No one knows precisely when European rugs weaving began in this area, but it is certain that tapestries were first woven there long before the Gothic era.
This is Authentic 19th Century French Green, Red fragment Rug number BB8481 in our internal collections. This rug was manufactured around 1860 in Europe, France, which means it is already 164 years old.
The dimensions of this rug are: 7'10" × 8'10" width × length, which corresponds to 238 × 269 cm in the metric system. This rug comes from the "Antique" era of carpet production.
The rug pattern most used colors are: Green and Red, and as a rug was qualified by our experts as a Botanic style in our wide offer of rugs. If you are interested in this unique work of art, please contact us with the number BB8481 for further information.
