A stately antique Oriental Amritsar rug, woven in India in the first quarter of the twentieth century. It is an absolutely classic piece, the like of which is highly desired by interior designers and collectors from all over the world. A classic Indo-Persian design of allover arabesques in golds and burgundy. In contrast to the grand sweeping scale of the field, the borders are narrow, focusing attention on the rich design at the center. The drawing is fluid and precise in the classic tradition of Persian and Indian carpets.The production of antique Indian rugs and carpets in any quantity dates back to the Mughal period of the late 1520's. Beginning with the conquest of Northern India by Babur, weaving workshops developed around the imperial cities of Agra, Fathpur and Lahore. Akbar the Great (1556-1605) and his successors sponsored and encouraged the weaving of splendid Indian versions of classic Persian floral, garden and hunting and carpets.
