Authetic Indian Amritsar Tan, Brown Hand-knotted Wool Rug

This early 20th century antique Indian Amritsar rug from Amritsar Rugs collection features an intricate all-over design of floral motifs, arabesques, palmettes, cloud bands and a flowering vine trellis in shades of dark brown over a tan field. More palmettes - a popular Indian carpet motif resembling the fan-shaped leaves of a palm tree - are patterned throughout the dark brown border for a unique yet traditional look.

The antique carpets for sale comes from Amritsar (meaning "the lake of immortality" in Sanskrit), a city in the northwest of India near the Kashmir region. The weavers of this city's tradition created unique textiles in part because they had not developed a distinctive style of rug-weaving as early as other Indian counterparts. While regions of southern and western India began weaving Persian-influenced rugs during the Mughal era, the weavers of Amritsar took their direction from the sensibilities of the West.
